PSP-2000 Review

Here we have the new PSP-2000. Let us see what was modified since the last PSP model and see whether or not it is worth it or not. To get right into the facts, the first thing I noticed is how light this PSP actually is. It is a lot lighter when compared with the original PSP. It looks a lot shinier and slick and you get the feeling that it will slip out of your hands when you are playing. The good news is that this will not happen as it is actually very comfortable to hold and play. We immediately noticed that the speakers have been moved from under the system’s face to it’s top. It is an interesting design move that makes the sound easier to hear. The D-Pad is a little bit higher when compared with the previous model. After you get used to this modification you will see that it is actually a little easier to play games. On the other hand the analog stick has exactly the same feel as the original and the headphone jack looks exactly the same, although in a slightly different location.Another modification visible is the moved wireless toggle. It is no longer on the side of the PSP but on the top. The Pro Duo memory card slot was also moved but the USB port remained in exactly the same place. We can also notice that the UMD sport, which was previously spring loaded, now supports a flip up port that the user will need to open it himself. This new PSP-2000 is not that special but it is better when compared with the previous model because it is lighter and we also though the design looked better as well. The PSP-2000 is definitely much more comfortable to hold.
The new PSPs battery life is of course almost impossible to compare with the old one but after some narrow tests we did notice that the PSP-2000 battery supports less of a battery life when compared with the original PlayStation Portable. On the other hand, if you take a big battery from a previous model and use it on the PSP-2000, you will get a much longer battery life. It might be worth it to purchase a big battery if you do not have one.
Many people complained about the original PSP when it came to loading times from UMD. Now we can see a PSP-2000 that bears 32 extra MB of NAND memory. It might sound like a great thing but after testing loading times we did not see such a huge difference. Games do load faster but only some games will notice the change and it is not as great as expected.
The biggest modification in the PSP-2000 is the fact that we can play our games on TV sets. In most cases you will need to spend 20 dollars extra as you will need extra cables. On the other hand the experience is very interesting. You will need HDTV in order to enjoy playing games on a widescreen. If you use a regular TV you will get black bars and the actual image of the game will be around a third of the screen.
To sum up the news around the PSP-2000, we have the following good aspects: a better D pad, TV out possibility, a lighter system and some faster loading times on some games. The bads: loading times are not really improved much, battery life is worse than the original in the stock version, TV-out only uses a part of the TV unless HDTV and an overall cheaper look at first. On the whole, the new PSP-2000 is better than the PSP but not with much.
